The Legend of Lake Toba
Long time ago, there was a poor farmer. He lived in a small hut near his rice field. He lived alone without any family. He only lived with other farmers in the village.
One day, he wanted to catch some fish for his dinner. He went to the river near his village. Not long time, he caught a big fresh fish. Suddenly, he heard a voice. “Please don’t kill me. If you let me live and put me into your rice field, you will have your dinner on your dining table.”
The farmer was surprised. He tried to find the voice. He couldn’t believe when he knew the voice from the fish.
“O....O.K., I will let you live and put you into my rice field.” Said the farmer.
The farmer took the fish and put it into his rice field. And then, he went home.
When he arrived at home, he was surprised. He saw his dinner was already set on the table.
It happened again and again. He couldn’t believe it. He was very curious.
One day, he went to the rice field and looked for the fish but he didn’t find it. He was surprised when heard some voice, “I’m here, near you.” Suddenly, there was a beautiful girl beside him. He couldn’t say anything when saw her. He couldn’t believe his eyes.
Then, he said, “Are you the fish that I caught yesterday?”
“Yes, I am. Thanks for your help to save my life. Would you marry me?” replied the girl.
“Of course, I would be honoured,” said the farmer.
“But on one condition, never tell our children that I was once a fish,” added the girl.
“I give you my words,” promised the farmer.
And then, they married.
One year later, they had a son. They call him Sam.
Years later, Sam grew up and became a smart boy.
One day, his mother asked him to bring his father’s lunch at the rice field. On the way, he felt hungry and ate his father’s lunch. Knowing this, the farmer was angry. “You are a naughty boy! You won’t be a good boy because you are actually a son of a fish!”
Sam cried and ran to his house. He looked for his mother. “Mom…mom…,” screamed Sam. His mother was surprised when heard Sam’s screaming.
“What happened honey? Are you fine?” said the mother afraid.
“Mom, daddy told me that I am a son of fish. Is it true Mom?” said Sam.
“No… of course, you’re not. You’re our children.” Said the mother.
“Honey, please stop crying. Trust me, you’re not a son of a fish” added the mother. Sam stopped crying and the mother went to the rice field.
When she arrived there, she said angrily to his husband, “You have broken your promise. Now you must be punished!”
“Darling, sorry, I never mind to tell our children about who he is actually,” said the farmer.
“I was angry when I told him. Forgive me darling, please? I love you.” Added the farmer.
“I can’t accept your apology. You still get punished!” replied the girl.
She left her husband. And suddenly, a big tide came and engulfed the village. The flood made a deep vast lake. People call it Lake Toba.
